Back Salbutamol Syrup (2 mg/5 ml is common in India) 20 Sep, 2025

Oral Salbutamol Syrup (2 mg/5 ml is common in India)

  • Age 2–6 years (toddlers/preschoolers):
0.1 mg/kg per dose, given three times daily (TDS).

    • Usual practical dose: 1–2 mg per dose TDS.

    • In syrup form (2 mg/5 ml):

      • 1 mg = 2.5 ml syrup

      • 2 mg = 5 ml syrup

    • So: typically 2.5–5 ml syrup TDS for a toddler, depending on weight.

Inhalation / Nebulization (preferred in children)

  • Dose: 0.15 mg/kg per dose (minimum 1.25 mg, max 5 mg), every 4–6 hours as needed.

  • For toddlers (say 12–15 kg): ~ 2–2.5 mg per nebulization.

  • Works faster and causes fewer systemic side effects than syrup.

⚠️ Safety & Monitoring

  • Side effects: jitteriness, fast heartbeat, irritability, rarely sleep disturbance.

  • Always use doctor-calculated dose based on child’s weight.

  • In small kids, nebulized salbutamol with mask/spacer is usually preferred to syrup for both safety and effectiveness.

👉 Summary for your 4.5-year-old toddler (~15 kg assumed weight):

  • Oral syrup: ~ 2.5–5 ml (2–4 times/day) depending on severity.

  • Nebulization: ~ 2.5 mg (1 neb) every 6–8 hrs if prescribed.
