Back Post-Nasal Drip vs Enlarged Adenoids 30 Aug, 2025

🏠 Home Observation Checklist

✅ Suspect Post-Nasal Drip (PND) if your child:

  • Frequently clears throat or makes “khh-khh” sound 🤧

  • Has dry cough at night/early morning (worse when lying down) 🌙

  • Complains of mucus stuck in throat or difficulty swallowing saliva

  • Has bad breath despite brushing regularly

  • Speaks normally (no blocked-nose sound), but throat irritation is continuous

✅ Suspect Enlarged Adenoids if your child:

  • Sleeps with mouth open or snores loudly 😴

  • Breathes mostly through the mouth even during the day

  • Has blocked nose most of the time (but no cold) 👃🚫

  • Has recurrent ear infections / reduced hearing (due to blocked Eustachian tube) 👂

  • Has a nasal/blocked nose voice (like speaking with a cold)

  • Shows restless sleep, pauses in breathing, or bedwetting (in severe sleep apnea cases)

📌 Quick At-Home Test:

👉 Ask your child to close mouth and breathe only through nose for 2 minutes:

  • If difficulty / noisy breathing → suspect adenoids.

  • If they manage fine but still cough/clear throat → likely post-nasal drip.

⚠️ When to See a Doctor (ENT/Pediatrician)

  • Loud snoring + pauses in breathing 😨

  • Repeated ear infections or hearing issues

  • Persistent cough >3 weeks

  • Poor sleep, irritability, or daytime tiredness
